If we compare Belgium, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Spain, French pensioners are the ones who receive the highest median income, with a total of €21,500.
The median annual income varies greatly by age groups from one country to the next. Among those aged 25-54, Belgians earn the highest income (€23,783), while for those aged 65 and older the French rank first. Generally, the revenue in south Europe is the lowest.
In France, the median annual income of those aged over 65 is similar to that of people between the ages of 25-54, i.e. around €21,500. It is the also case in Spain but with a way lower average annual income of around €13,500.
Retirement Equals Less Income
Generally, the annual income of people aged over 65 is lower than that of other age groups. The impact upon retirement is the most pronounced in Belgium and the United Kingdom with -25% and -20% less in median annual salary. In France, the impact is less significant with -9%.
The average age for retirement in Europe is 60 years old for men and 59 years old for women. This average age will increase by 2035 due to the plan most Europeans countries, like Germany or France, have of shifting the retirement age to 67. Thus, the annual income of people aged over 65 should increase slightly with a later retirement age.
Nonetheless, Europe, especially Germany and Italy, face an important issue. With a decrease in the number of births, the increase of life expectancy and a high rate of unemployment, there are fewer contributors for an increasing number of pensioners.
Lower incomes for women
